Painting a metal table with metallic paint is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to breathe new life into your furniture. This guide will show you exactly how to paint a metal table in one easy step—yes, one step!
By the end of this blog, you’ll have all the tools and confidence you need to tackle this quick and rewarding project.
Not only is this a budget-friendly way to upgrade your space, but it’s also a super satisfying DIY project. Whether you want to add a touch of glam to your home or give an old piece of furniture a second chance, painting your metal table with metallic paint is an easy win.
Why Metallic Paint?
Metallic paint is a game-changer when it comes to revamping furniture.
It adds a sophisticated shine, comes in various stunning finishes (like gold, silver, or bronze and brass), and works beautifully on metal surfaces. If your metal table is looking dull or outdated, metallic paint can breathe new life into it with minimal effort.
This is a close-up of the table I refinished. Notice the vain-like pattern that covers this metal table. It’s nice, but it just didn’t go with the décor in this house. I’m going to show you how to change it in one easy step and very little paint.
What You’ll Need
Before we jump into the painting process, gather these supplies:
- Metallic paint (This vintage brass metallic paint was all I needed)
- Drop cloth (to protect your workspace)
- Gloves (to keep your hands paint-free)
- Small artist brush (to apply the paint)
The One Easy Step to Paint Your Metal Table
Here’s the magic: Use metallic spray paint designed for metal surfaces.
- Prep the Table: First, ensure your table is clean and free of dust or grease. Use a damp cloth to wipe it down, and let it dry completely. If there’s any rust or peeling paint, lightly sand those areas to create a smooth surface. This will help the paint adhere better.
- Protect Your Workspace: Lay down a Drop cloth to catch any overspray. Work in a well-ventilated area (outdoors is best).
- Apply Paints: Use a small artist’s brush to apply the Metallic paint in even strokes. Apply two coats to ensure full coverage.
- Admire Your Work: Once the paint is dry, your table will look like it came straight out of a designer showroom! No topcoat is usually needed with metallic spray paint, as it’s formulated to provide a durable finish.
Common Questions About Painting Metal Tables
Q: Do I need a primer?
Not usually. Many metallic spray paints are designed for direct application to metal. Check the label on your paint for specific instructions.
Q: How long does it take to dry?
Most metallic paints dry to the touch in 30 minutes and fully cure in 24 hours.
Q: Will the paint chip over time?
If you prep the surface properly and apply the paint in light, even coats, the finish should last for years. However, avoid dragging sharp objects across the table to prevent scratches.
