So, what are hashtags, and should I register them?
I remember when people first started hashtag-ing a couple of years ago. To tell you the truth, I didn’t get it. But once I saw everyone using them, I decided to take a closer look. Now I use them all the time.
So, what is a hashtag?
A hashtag is a # placed before a keyword, acronym or phrase (no spaces between words in that phrase) It basically turns the hashtag into a link. When you click on the hashtag it allows you to see everyone else who is using that hashtag.
What does a hashtag do and why should I use them in my social media posts?
Hashtags play a key role in creating interest in your social media posts. It allows people to find posts that are relevant to their interests and users who share the same interests. This is a great way to connect with your core audience.
Including hashtags in your posts will help categorize the content you share with your audience. It’s a great way to be noticed and establish your business, your name, or your brand.
Make your hashtags specific to the audience you’re trying to attract. The more targeted the audience, the more engagement you will have, and the better your content will be received.
Create your own branded hashtag specifically for your brand. I created #turnyourpassionintoapaycheck #cherylphan #artzyfartzycreations. And yes, I also registered them with TWUBS.com.
WHY?
Honestly, it was very inexpensive so why not. Because social media changes all the time I decided to play it safe and register my hashtags. The only hashtags I did register are the ones I use for my brand; my name (cherylphan) and my tagline. (turnyourpassionintopaycheck)
Registering your hashtag is not like registering your domain name.
Registering your hashtag will not stop others from using it. You can’t “own” a hashtag like you own your website’s domain name.
Registering a hashtag just stakes your right to that hashtag and adds you to a hashtag directory. It’s something you become known for.
So, use it a lot. Introduce the hashtag to your followers and encourage them to use it when talking about that topic.
Hope this was helpful. Remember, just because I registered my hashtags doesn’t mean you have to. Do what makes sense for your business.
