Let’s break this down so it’s easy to understand. By the end of this, you’ll have a clear idea of how to price handmade items in a way that’s fair to you and attractive to buyers. Plus, I have a FREE downloadable Pricing Calculator for you.
1. Know Your Costs
First things first—you’ve got to know how much your projects are costing you. This includes:
- Materials: Add up the cost of everything that goes into your project. Paint, wood, fabric, glue—every little thing counts.
- Time: Your time has value! Ask yourself, how long did it take to make? Decide on an hourly rate that feels fair for your skill level.
- Overhead: Think about costs like electricity, tools, and workspace. These are part of running your creative business.
- Extras: Don’t forget things like packaging, shipping, or even marketing costs if you’re selling online.
Here’s a formula you can use to price handmade items for profit:
(Materials + Time + Overhead) x Profit Margin = Selling Price
For example, let’s say you made a beautiful painted sign:
- Materials: $10
- Time: 2 hours at $20/hour = $40
- Overhead: $5
- Your base cost is $55. Now, multiply that by your desired profit margin, say 2.5, and your total cost comes out to $137.50. Boom! A fee that pays you what you deserve.
2. Add a Profit Margin
Why the markup? It’s not just about making money; it also:
- Covers unexpected expenses (like running out of paint or needing extra supplies).
- Leaves room for promotions or discounts.
- Shows customers that your work is high-quality and valuable.
3. Research Your Market
Take a look at what other people are charging for similar items. This helps you understand what customers are willing to pay. Check out Etsy, craft fairs, and local shops to get a feel for what people are charging.
Keep in mind, if your work is super unique or high-quality, you charge more. People are often willing to pay more for items that are one-of-a-kind or handmade with love.
4. Avoid Common Mistakes…
Here are a few trips to avoid when setting the value for your handmade items
- Undervaluing Your Time: Your time is one of your biggest investments. Don’t sell yourself short.
- Ignoring Market Research: Not knowing what others are charging can either leave you overpriced or undervalued.
- Skipping Overhead Costs: Overhead adds up over time, so don’t leave it out of your formula.
5. Engage with Real-Life Examples
Let’s say Emily, one of my readers, makes handmade candles. She used to price her candles at $10 each, thinking that was fair. But after breaking down her costs and using the pricing formula, she realized she needed to charge $20 per candle to make a real profit. She made the change, and guess what? Her customers didn’t even flinch because they recognized the quality and care she put into her work.
6. Test and Adjust
Once set the amount, test them out. If people are snapping up your items like hotcakes, you might be able to increase your prices. If sales are slow, consider tweaking your pricing or offering bundles or promotions.

Believe in Your Work
The key to price handmade items is to believe in the value of what you’re creating. When you price your items fairly and confidently, you’re not just making money—you’re building a sustainable business that celebrates your talent.
So, go ahead, friend. Put that price tag on with pride! You’ve earned it. And if you ever feel stuck, just remember this: people aren’t just buying a product; they’re buying a piece of your story, your passion, and your creativity. That’s priceless.
