Budget-Friendly Mirror Makeover
This is a beautiful mirror. I love all the details and how it fits perfectly over the couch, but the color just didn’t go with the décor. I bought this at a garage sale for 0 about 10 years ago. Back in the day when Old World and the Tuscan look was popular.
Now I’m transforming my home in a Coastal décor, but I just couldn’t part with this mirror. So, I’m going to do the unthinkable.
As you can see, I hung the mirror before I painted it. Why, you ask? Because this mirror weighs a ton and it was much easier to paint the sides than on the floor or a table. There was no way for me to lift it by myself. It took two guys just to hang it on the wall.
To avoid getting paint on the wall, I taped brown paper around the mirror. I covered the couch for protection and taped the glass on the mirror, so I didn’t get any paint on it.
The quickest and easiest way to paint a piece of furniture that has lots of detail is to use chalk paint. NO Prep and NO mess. I’m not lazy but I like taking the easy way out.
I also like to make my own chalk paint because it saves me a lot of money, the color selection is endless and it super easy to make. Here’s a link showing you how to make your own chalk paint.
One of my favorite brushes to use is this round brush. It gets into all the nooks and crannies and holds a lot of paint.
I have two different techniques for distressing the finish. You can use 220 grit sandpaper and lightly go over the high points where it will reveal the base color. In this case, the gold.
The second way you can distress your project is with a damp cloth. Just wrap your finger around a damp cloth and rub the paint on the high points and edges until you expose the base color. This is what I do when I’m in a rush and don’t want to wait until the paint dries.
