Some DIY secrets are simply too good to keep to yourself. This is one of them.
One of the biggest myths about painting furniture is that you need expensive chalk paint to create a beautiful finish. The truth is, you don’t. In fact, you can make your own chalk paint at home in just a few minutes using any latex paint in your favorite color and a simple chalk paint powder. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also have unlimited color choices and the same smooth, matte finish DIY furniture painters love. Let me show you how……

After more than 25 years as a professional decorative painter, I’ve discovered that some of the best furniture painting tips aren’t the ones that cost the most—they’re the ones that help you work smarter. Today, I’m sharing my favorite homemade chalk paint recipe that has saved me thousands of dollars while giving me beautiful, professional-looking results on countless furniture makeovers.
Why Make Your Own Chalk Paint?
There are plenty of reasons DIYers love homemade chalk paint, but the biggest one is simple…
You’ll Save a Lot of Money
Let’s do the math.
A quart of name-brand chalk paint can easily cost $40 or more.
A quart of quality latex paint from your local hardware store may cost around $7–$10.
Simply add a few tablespoons of Magic Chalk Paint Powder with a few drops of water, mix it up, and add it to your latex paint and you’ve created your own chalk-type paint for a fraction of the price.
That’s a huge savings—especially if you paint furniture regularly.
Unlimited Color Choices
One of my favorite things about making my own chalk paint is that I’m not limited to someone else’s color palette.
Instead of choosing from a small selection of premixed colors, I can walk into any paint store and have virtually any color mixed.
Want a soft coastal blue?
A rich navy?
A warm sage green?
The perfect creamy white?
No problem!
You get the exact color you’ve been dreaming about.
Mix Only What You Need
Another huge benefit is less waste.
Instead of opening an entire can of specialty paint, simply mix the amount you need for your project.
Painting one picture frame?
Mix one cup.
Painting a dresser?
Mix a larger batch.
No leftover paint collecting dust on a shelf.
What Paint Can You Use?
The great news is that you don’t need expensive paint.
You can use:
- Flat latex paint
- Matte paint
- Acrylic paint
- Most water-based paints
(I’m simply using flat paint in this example because it’s easy to compare. Use your favorite brand.)

Pro Tips for a Beautiful Finish
After painting thousands of pieces over the years, here are a few tricks I use every time.
Slightly Wet Your Brush
Dip your brush in a little water before dipping it into the paint.
This helps the paint glide across the surface for a smoother finish.
Smooth Between Coats
If you notice tiny brush marks or rough spots, lightly sand between coats.
No sandpaper?
Here’s one of my favorite budget-friendly tricks…
A brown paper grocery bag works surprisingly well for smoothing painted surfaces.
Seriously!
Try it once, and you’ll be hooked.
Store Leftover Paint
One of the best things about this recipe is that it stores beautifully.
Seal it tightly in an airtight container, and it can last up to a year.
Just stir well before using it again.
Want Chalkboard Paint Instead?
Here’s another fun trick.
If you’d like to create your own chalkboard paint, simply double the amount of Magic Chalk Paint Powder while using the same amount of paint.
Now you’ve got a custom chalkboard finish in any color you’d like.
How fun is that?
Why I Love Magic Chalk Paint Powder
I’ve tried countless homemade chalk paint recipes over the years.
Some use plaster of Paris.
Some use baking soda.
Some use grout.
While they all have their place, I use Magic Chalk Paint Powder because I wanted something that mixed easily, stayed smooth, stored well, and produced consistent results every time.
It’s become one of my favorite products because it makes creating beautiful furniture finishes simple—even for beginners.
Is Homemade Chalk Paint Worth It?
Absolutely.
When you can:
- Save money
- Choose any paint color you want
- Mix only what you need
- Reduce waste
- Create beautiful furniture makeovers
- Keep extra paint on hand for future projects
…it’s hard to go back to buying expensive premixed chalk paint.
Sometimes the smartest DIY trick isn’t buying more products—it’s learning how to make the products you already love.
