Ever walked into a space and thought, Hmm, a little tweak could make this perfect?
A Jaw-Dropping Look
A simple step like painting or refinishing the banister can completely transform the look of a staircase. For instance, if your staircase has mismatched elements, staining the banister in a complementary color can create a stunning visual impact.
Are you ready? I’m spilling all the secrets right here where I’m creating a jaw-dropping look that turns heads the moment you step in. Trust me it’s a game changer!
The Weekend Transformation: 3 Easy Steps
I know this looks like a huge task and you’re probably not up for the job, but what if I told you that you could get this done in one weekend and 3- easy steps without breaking the bank?
Let’s face it, this staircase is a showstopper. It’s beautiful and elegant but the color mismatch stops you dead in your tracks. The minute you walk into this house this is the first thing you see. It’s obvious we need to change the banister color to match the steps. So how do we do that? Well, let me show you.
Step 1: Prep Work
The first thing we need to do is the prep work. Tape off all the walls, floors, and areas where you don’t want to get stained.
Then, lightly sand the clear coat off the banister. I know it looks like a lot of work, but this step is the most important. If you skip this step the stain will not adhere to the wood. I used medium grit sandpaper and lightly sanded the entire staircase. Then I took a paintbrush and brushed off all the dust. You’re not taking it down to the bare wood, you’re just removing the top shinny coat.
Step 2: Staining Process
Next, I used a chip brush and applied the stain working it into all the nooks and crannies in small sections at a time. Then I used a car sponge (cut into a small piece) and wiped off the excess stains. In the large areas, I just used the sponge to apply the stain. Once you’re done allow the stain to dry overnight.
Tip: make sure you wear gloves. This is an oil-based product.
Step 3: Clear Coat Application
Apply the clear coat. I like using this round brush. It’s nice and soft and fits into the tight areas. I also like to apply two coats to the area that gets touched the most like the railing everyone holds on to when going up and down the staircase.
