How to Find the Perfect Chair to Paint

Have you ever wanted to paint a chair but weren’t sure what to look for?

Maybe you’ve walked through a thrift store, estate sale, or antique shop and wondered, “Could I turn that into something amazing?”

I ask myself that question every time I go chair hunting.

Most people see worn fabric, scratched wood, or an outdated style and keep walking. I see the beginning of a beautiful designer-inspired chair. The secret isn’t finding a perfect chair—it’s knowing what to look for before you buy it.

In this post, I’ll share the things I always check before bringing a chair home. These simple tips can save you time, money, and frustration while helping you choose a chair that’s worth transforming into a one-of-a-kind piece you’ll be proud to show off.

The secret isn’t finding a perfect chair.

It’s finding the right chair.

Where to Find Hidden Gems

One of the best things about painting furniture is that you don’t have to spend a fortune.

Keep an eye out at:

  • Local thrift stores
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Estate sales
  • Consignment shops
  • Antique malls
  • Garage and yard sales
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStores

You’d be surprised how many amazing chairs are hiding in plain sight.

Look for Good Bones

When I’m shopping for a chair, I always ignore the color, the fabric, and even the finish.

Instead, I ask myself one question:

Does this chair have good bones?

If the frame is well-built and structurally sound, almost everything else can be transformed.

Look for:

  • A sturdy frame that doesn’t wobble
  • Solid wood construction whenever possible
  • Tight joints with no loose legs
  • No major cracks or broken pieces
  • Beautiful curves or interesting details that will stand out once painted

A quality chair is worth the effort.

Check the Cushion

The seat cushion is just as important.

Press down firmly, or better yet, sit on it.

If it springs back nicely and feels supportive, that’s a great sign.

If it completely collapses or feels lumpy, you’ll probably need to replace the foam—which adds extra time and expense.

A firm cushion makes the project much easier.

Inspect the Fabric

Don’t let outdated fabric scare you away.

A dated floral print can become something amazing.

However, I do avoid chairs with:

  • Large tears
  • Dry-rotted fabric
  • Mold or mildew
  • Strong odors
  • Pet damage

Minor stains usually aren’t a deal breaker if you’re planning to paint the fabric anyway.

Examine the Wood

Look closely at the wood frame.

Small scratches, worn finishes, and minor dings are completely normal.

Those imperfections disappear during the refinishing process.

I usually pass on chairs that have:

  • Water damage
  • Rotting wood
  • Major splits
  • Missing carved pieces
  • Extensive repairs that affect the structure

Cosmetic problems are easy.

Structural problems aren’t always worth the investment.

Imagine the Finished Piece

This is my favorite part.

Instead of seeing an old chair…

I picture what it could become.

Maybe it’s a bold designer-inspired accent chair.

Maybe it’s an elegant French-style chair with metallic details.

Maybe it’s covered with luxury-inspired patterns that become the conversation piece in the room.

The best transformations begin with imagination.

Every Chair Has a Story

One of the things I love most about creating designer chairs is giving forgotten furniture a second chance.

Instead of ending up in a landfill, that chair becomes something beautiful that someone is proud to display in their home.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking an ordinary chair and turning it into a one-of-a-kind work of art.

And once you know what to look for, you’ll start spotting great candidates everywhere you go.
