Ever had that “uh-oh” moment when the wallpaper you painstakingly installed just doesn’t vibe with your space? Well, one of my amazing clients experienced exactly that – over 800 square feet of “not quite right” colors staring back at her. But hey, guess who swooped in to save the day? Yep, yours truly! ???? You’re not going to believe this limewash transformation using the Limewash technique. It was magical!
Here’s where it completely changed the game. Instead of ripping everything down and starting over (hello, time and money!), I used this Limewash technique to softly blend, tone down, and transform those harsh colors into something warm, elegant, and high-end.
The beauty of limewash is in its movement—it creates that soft, cloudy texture that instantly elevates a space without looking overdone. As I layered the limewash, you could literally watch the walls come to life, adding depth and character that wallpaper just couldn’t achieve. And the best part? It gave her that custom, designer finish she was dreaming of—without the stress of a full redo.
This magical process lets you cover up those darker areas while adding a hint of transparency. And the best part? A little goes a long way! I mean, I used just about a quart of Limestone paint for the whole shebang?
That’s the beauty of working with limewash—it’s incredibly forgiving and easy to build in layers. You can control how much coverage you want while still letting some of that texture peek through. It creates that soft, lived-in look that feels high-end without trying too hard, giving your space instant character and charm.
How to make Limewash
Curious about how to create a limewash? It’s easy-peasy! Take a tablespoon of the lime paint, add a spritz of water to dilute it, dip your artist brush, and voila! Paint away on those areas you want to transform. Need more coverage? Add a touch more paint, simple as that!
Watch this quick video to see how easy it really is!
But wait, there’s more! Once we kissed the brown and gold goodbye, guess who showed up uninvited? Silver!
Yup, peeking through and adding that extra oomph to the space. Sneaky, but totally fabulous. ????And honestly, that’s one of the reasons I LOVE working with limewash—it has a mind of its own in the best way possible.
As the layers start to dry, you get these unexpected undertones that peek through and create depth you could never fake with regular paint. That soft shimmer from the silver gave the walls a subtle glow, almost like the light was dancing across the surface. It added a modern, elevated feel without overpowering the room. Sometimes those “happy accidents” end up being the most beautiful part of the entire transformation.
Here is the finished limewash technique. If you have outdated wallpaper or love the pattern but not the color, here is an inexpensive and easy way to transform your room on a budget.
What I love most about using limewash is how versatile it is—you’re not locked into one look. You can go soft and subtle or bold and dramatic depending on how you layer it. It’s also perfect for DIYers because you don’t need perfection… the movement actually makes it more beautiful. With just a little practice, you can create a custom, high-end finish that looks like you hired a pro, without the hefty price tag.
