How to use an easy peel-and-stick border for kids’ room makeovers. If you’re looking for budget-friendly ideas to transform your kid’s room, you’re going to love this!
In this blog, I’ll walk you through how I revamped a room using a simple checkerboard peel-and-stick border, including an easy hack to upgrade your ceiling fan.
Whether you’re redecorating for your child or just want to try a new DIY project, this tutorial will make your space look professionally designed without the hassle.
You’ll learn how to apply these borders seamlessly and avoid common mistakes, so your project turns out flawless.
Applying Peel and Stick to Your Ceiling Fan Blades
When I decided to makeover this room, I wanted every detail to reflect the race car theme—including the ceiling fan. It may seem small but turning that brown ceiling fan into a sleek black-and-white checkerboard masterpiece was easier than I thought.
You might be wondering: does a ceiling fan really need to be part of the design? Absolutely! Small touches like this bring a room together and give it that polished, cohesive look. When every detail is in sync, the room feels more intentional and high-end.
Here’s exactly how I did it:
First things first: you’ll need to get a checkerboard self-stick wall border. The great thing is, that this material works for both your ceiling fan blades and the room’s border.
Measure Before You Start
Before you jump in, make sure to measure your fan blades and the perimeter of the room carefully. Always buy a little extra—trust me, you’ll want it in case you make a small cutting mistake (been there, done that!).
Painting the Fan Blades
Next, I spray-painted the edges of the fan blades. They were originally brown, which didn’t fit the black-and-white theme. A couple of coats of black spray paint worked perfectly. This step is optional, but if you want a clean, modern look, it’s worth the extra effort.
How to Apply a Peel and Stick Border to Fan Blades:
This is where the magic happens! Once your fan blades are ready, grab the checkerboard border and lay one blade on top. Use a pencil to trace the shape of the blade onto the border, then cut it out.
Now for the easiest part: just peel the backing off the sticker and carefully stick it onto the blade. Smooth out any air bubbles with your fingers as you go to ensure it lays flat.
Pro Tip:
Use a pick or small tool to poke holes where the screws go before you reattach the blades. It makes putting the fan back together so much easier—you’ll thank me later.

Peel and Stick Border:
After the fan blades were done, I applied the same checkerboard border around the entire room to tie everything together. Just like the fan blades, it’s as simple as peel-and-stick. Be sure to start in a less visible corner of the room, just in case your edges don’t line up perfectly.
When you’re measuring for the room, use a level to be sure the checkerboard stays straight as you apply it. A crooked border can throw off the entire look, and no one wants that!
