DIY brick fireplace makeover using white chalk paint and brush for a weathered, rustic finish

Have you ever sat in your living room, stared at that old brick fireplace, and thought, “This thing could really use a glow-up”? You’re not alone! Brick fireplaces can sometimes make a room feel dark, heavy, and, let’s face it—stuck in the past. But I’ve got a super simple trick up my sleeve to help you transform that tired fireplace into a charming, weathered beauty without spending days on the project or breaking the bank.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Paint a Brick Fireplace for a Weathered Look

Let’s talk about my favorite one-step process to create that cozy, rustic, weathered finish we all love. It’s easy, fast, and gives your fireplace that soft, chalky look that brightens up the entire space. No need for fancy equipment or tons of supplies—just a few things you probably already have on hand. And in case you don’t, here is a supply list with everything you need.

Supply List for How to Paint a Brick Fireplace

Spray Bottle

Tape

Paper for the floor

Paint Brush

Masonry Brush

Magic Powder: (This is my secret to making chalk-type paint at home!)

Flat latex paint: Purchase your paint at your local paint store

Bucket: Use any plastic container you have handy

Step 1: Mix Your Paint Like a Pro

First things first—let’s make that chalky goodness. In a container, mix the Magic Powder (1/2 cup magic Powder with ¼ cup water) don’t worry, it’s just my name for a simple powder blend I use to create a DIY chalk paint effect. You want the mixture to be smooth but not too runny—think pancake batter consistency.

Then, combine the paint and the magic powder mixture. Lastly, add 25% more water to the mixture. This is what you will be applying to the bricks.

OK, now that you have your secret sauce, let’s start painting.

Also, you can use any color you want. I used a light gray on this project.

Step 2: Spray Brick

Using your spray bottle, spray a light mist of water on the brick. DO NOT over-spray. This will help move the paint and give it that opaque look and some of the brick colors will peak through.

Step 3: Apply the Paint to Each Brick

Now comes the fun part! Grab your chip brush and start applying the paint mixture directly onto the bricks. Don’t stress about perfection here—this is meant to have that worn, weathered character. The beauty of this technique is that it allows the texture of the brick to peek through, giving it that soft farmhouse or cottage-style charm.

Step 4: Smooth It Out

Once you’ve brushed on your paint, take your masonry brush and gently smooth over the bricks. This step helps to soften the look even more and blend out any harsh brush strokes, leaving you with a beautifully aged, natural finish.

Why This Is the Easiest Way to Learn How to Paint a Brick Fireplace

This is truly a one-step process—no primers, no sealers, no headaches. Just a simple way to breathe new life into an old fireplace. The combination of the chalky paint and your smoothing technique will give it that perfect, weathered finish that looks like it’s been there forever, in the best possible way.

Why I Love Using Magic Powder

I always get asked why I make my own chalk-type paint. The answer is simple—when you mix flat paint with Magic Powder, you get a finish that adheres beautifully to surfaces like brick and gives that matte, velvety look we all crave. Plus, you have complete control over the texture and consistency. And not to mention it’s a ¼ of the price of chalk paint that you buy in the store.
