How to make faux snow with Epsom salt by Cheryl Phan

Want to learn an easy (and seriously fun) way to make faux snow using Epsom salt? If you love decorating but don’t love spending a fortune on seasonal décor, you’re going to love this simple little project.

If you’ve followed my work for any amount of time, you already know I’m a big fan of coastal décor. My heart is at the beach, even if my address hasn’t caught up with that dream yet. One day I’ll be sipping coffee while listening to the waves, but until then, I bring those coastal, beachy vibes right into my home.

That’s exactly how this project started.

I was wandering through a thrift store (one of my favorite places to find hidden gems) and spotted a centerpiece sitting on a shelf for $2.50. It definitely had potential, but let’s just say it had seen better days. Most people probably walked right past it, but I could already picture how pretty it could be with just a little TLC.

Now here’s the funny part. I live in Florida, so snow is not exactly part of our winter experience. But I still love the cozy feeling of Christmas décor, and I wanted something that felt festive without straying too far from my coastal style. That’s when faux snow came to mind—and not just any faux snow, but an easy, budget-friendly version you can make yourself.

This Epsom salt faux snow is one of my favorite DIY tricks because it’s simple, inexpensive, and looks surprisingly realistic. The best part? It has a soft shimmer that mimics fresh snow that’s just fallen, catching the light in the prettiest way.

Here’s a quick video showing you how to make epsom salt snow

For this project, I kept the supply list short and sweet. I used glue, Epsom salt, shells, starfish, and a couple of flowers. That’s it. No fancy tools, no complicated steps, and nothing you can’t easily find at a craft store, dollar store, or even already have at home.

Once you apply the glue, you simply sprinkle the Epsom salt over it and let it do its magic. This is one of those projects where perfection is not the goal. In fact, uneven coverage actually makes it look more natural—just like real snow. If you want a heavier, chunkier snow look, use a little more glue. If you prefer a light dusting, go easy on it. You’re in full control.

After the faux snow dried, I started hot-gluing the shells onto the garland. I mixed in starfish and added flowers for a soft, coastal touch. To finish it off, I placed a battery-operated candle in the center. That warm glow paired with the snowy texture instantly made the whole piece feel cozy and festive.

And here’s the part I really love. The entire project cost me about $16 total. If I saw this same centerpiece sitting on a store shelf, styled and ready to go, it would easily be priced at $50 or more. Probably more. But because I made it myself, I saved money and ended up with something completely unique.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I love DIY projects like this. You’re not just decorating your home—you’re creating something personal. Something that reflects your style, your creativity, and your ability to see potential where others might not.

This faux snow technique isn’t limited to centerpieces either. You can use it on wreaths, ornaments, tabletop trees, lanterns, pinecones, and so many other décor pieces. Once you try it, you’ll start looking around your home and thinking, “Ooooh, this would look cute with a little snow.”

I hope this project inspired you to look at everyday items in a new way and reminded you that beautiful décor doesn’t have to be expensive. Sometimes all it takes is a simple idea, a few affordable supplies, and a little creativity.

And if this project got you thinking bigger—like how you could turn your creativity, crafting, or DIY skills into something more—I’d love for you to explore that too. If you want to learn how to start making money with your hobby, get the drtails HERE
