Are you stuck on how to choose a paintbrush? Do you find yourself standing in the paint aisle looking at a million brushes and can’t decide what one to buy? Although they may look alike they are very different and designed for a specific job and specific paints. Here are a couple of easy things to remember when selecting a paintbrush.
The first tip on how to choose a paintbrush is DON’T buy cheap paintbrushes, a good quality brush will last you years if you take care of it. It’s worth the investment. Not only will it last longer it will give you better coverage, but it will also go on easier and make your job easier. I like using Purdy Paint brushes.
A good paintbrush has four hallmarks
1: Look for a brush with densely packed bristles that run all the way through the ferrule.
2: Look for brushes that spring back from the base and don’t bend
3: Look for a brush that has multiple length bristles with a slim top
4: Look for a bristle that has flag tips (they look like split ends)
This will help hold more paint and spread evenly.
.
There are two types of brushes, latex bushes, and oil-based brushes.
Painting with latex paint
When painting with latex paint use a synthetic brush because it doesn’t absorb moisture.
The best type of brush to use is Nylon or Polyester. Purdy makes a nice brush and can be found in any paint store.
Painting with Oil paint
Use natural bristles for oil-based paint. I like the black China brushes because they don’t leave brush marks. It will make your job so much easier.
You can also use a nylon/polyester blend brush for oil paints such as varnishes, shellac, and polyurethane.
Angled Brush
The best brush to buy for trimming and cutting in the ceilings and floorboards is a 2 1/2 angled brush. It makes a sharp point for straight lines and it’s the right width for most jobs.
Flat Brush
Flat brushes are used for larger jobs such as painting doors and large furniture pieces.
