If you have a little boy who loves cars and would like to create a race car-themed bedroom that will melt his heart, you need to keep reading.
In this blog, I’m going to walk you through the process of how I used a stencil to turn an ordinary bedroom into an amazing race car-themed space for a little boy with Down Syndrome. This is the first in a six-part series where I’ll share each custom design element that made this room truly unique. Today, we’re focusing on how a custom stencil brought our vision to life!
A little back history. Nine years ago I started a nonprofit organization called – Paint For Children– that blesses children with special needs with a room makeover.
Although I think I’m the one who receives the biggest blessing. I can’t express the joy it brings to see the expression on their little faces when they see their new room for the first time, it brings tears to my eyes.
With a little imagination and a lot of help from my volunteers, we transformed this room into a race car theme (Lightning MacQueen) bedroom for a little boy with Down Syndrome.
This was his room before. Follow along for the next 5 blogs as we reveal how we transform this room from ceiling to floor, into a kid’s dream bedroom.
Laying the Foundation for a Race Car Themed Bedroom
Every makeover starts with a blank canvas, and for this room, we knew that stencils would play a major role in creating the bold, race car look we were going for. But before we could dive into the design, we needed to prepare the walls with the perfect base colors.
We chose a classic combination: white on the top half of the walls and blue on the bottom half. This contrast set the stage for the custom details we’d add later.
Dennis and his team from “On a Roll Painting” expertly applied two coats of paint, ensuring a smooth and clean surface for our stencil work. Once the paint was dry, it was time to get creative with applying the custom stencil with his name on it!
Step-by-Step Guide to Our Custom Stencil Design
Stencils are such a fun way to personalize a room, and for this project, it was one of the focal points in the room.
Here’s how we did it:
- Choosing the Right Stencil
We created a custom stencil design that resembled a racetrack, complete with sharp turns and straight lines. The stencil was large enough to make a bold impact but simple enough to repeat along the walls.
2. Positioning the Stencil
The key to getting the stencil just right is proper alignment. We measured the walls and carefully positioned the stencil to ensure it ran evenly along the room.
3. Applying the Paint
For a crisp, clean look, we used a small sponge roller to apply paint (use any latex paint) through the stencil. The black represented the track, and we used white for lane markings to give it an authentic racetrack feel.
4. Peeling Back the Stencil
Here comes the satisfying part—peeling off the stencil to reveal the design! After applying the paint, and allowing it to dry, we carefully peeled back the corners with a pick tool that is supplied with the stencil.
5. Remove sticky stencil
Carefully lift the corners and peel them off. How awesome is that!
6. Touching Up
Sometimes, paint can bleed through the stencil, but no worries—this is easy to fix. Using a small artist’s brush, we touched up any areas that needed it, ensuring the lines were clean and sharp.
Why Stencils Are a Game-Changer for Themed Rooms
Custom stencil designs are an excellent way to bring personality into any space, and they’re perfect for themed bedrooms like this one. They allow you to create a bold design without having to be a professional artist.
In this race car-themed bedroom, the stencil helped us achieve the look of a real racetrack, giving the room an immersive and playful vibe that made it feel like you could hear the roar of engines!
What’s Next in This Makeover?
This custom stencil design is just one of the many incredible elements we added to this race car-themed bedroom. In the coming weeks, I’ll reveal more of the amazing features, like:
- A checkerboard pattern that wraps around the room and ceiling fan
- A dresser transformed into a tool chest

- Hubcaps used as wall décor
- A custom Lightning McQueen mural
