Imagine walking through a thrift store and coming across a dusty old dresser tucked away in a corner. Upon closer inspection, you notice its elegant curves and intricate carvings, hinting at its former glory.

Despite its outdated finish, you can’t help but see its potential to become a statement piece in your home.

I don’t just use any paint on my projects, I like to use the best products I can find for long-lasting durability.

Preparing Your Furniture: Before you start painting, it’s essential to prepare your furniture properly. Remove any hardware, such as knobs or handles, and clean the surface thoroughly to remove dirt and grease.

If the furniture has a glossy finish, lightly sanding it can help the paint adhere better.

I use an electric sander for the larger areas with  medium-grade sandpaper. The goal is to remove the sheen which helps the primer to stick better.

Hand sand the detailed areas with medium-grade sandpaper. The electric sander is too heavy for this area and it will scratch the glass under it. Normally I would take  the glass out but  in this case, it was glued in and impossible to remove

Before I started to paint I had to figure out a way to protect the glass from getting paint on it and because I couldn’t remove the glass, I slid paper between the wood and the glass and then used tape to hold it in place.

The Painting Process: Now comes the fun part – painting! Using a high-quality  brush (so you don’t have brush makes) and sponge roller  (this will ensure a smooth finish), apply Stix Primer (it’s one of the best on the market) in a thin, even coat.  Allow to dry completely before applying the paint.

Once the primer is dry, apply two coats of Advance Paint (you can buy locally) or you can also use  Cabinet Coat. I like using both because it’s a urethane acrylic that dries hard. The satin finish is usually the one I use but you can use any sheen you desire.

Finished Product: Repurposing old furniture with paint is a creative and rewarding way to transform your space. By choosing the right paint and following the proper steps, you can breathe new life into old pieces and create stunning focal points for your home. So, why wait? Grab a brush and start revamping your furniture today!
